In the summer of 2007, the Tienda Verde (literally, the Green Store) was officially opened for business. The store offers the Solar Women of Totogalpa (Las Mujeres Solares) a place to spend their “$horas” that are granted to them in exchange for their contributions to Grupo Fenix projects underway in Sabana Grande de Totogalpa, Nicaragua.
The Tienda Verde operates at the el Centro Solar (Solar Center) in Sabana Grande. It is open the first Monday of each month from 9am to 1pm. The goods in the Green Store are donated by friends of Grupo Fenix and include items such as sheets and towels, childrens books in Spanish, cookware and kitchen utensiles, and new and gently used clothing. Because donated goods are currently in limited supply, the shoppers can select three items that are paid for with $horas and another three items paid for with córdobas (the currency of Nicaragua and named after its founder, Francisco Hernández de Córdoba). As of June 20, 2008 19.25 córdobas equals one dollar.
Because of the Tienda Verde, these dedicated women can take pride in what they have earned by working hard to achieve a vision of a better community. Grupo Fenix needs help in order to grow the store; if you are interested in learning more about making donations to the Tienda Verde, visit our Grupo Fenix Partner page.
