Las Mujeres Solares de Totogalpa Selected as 2008 SEED Award Finalist
On May 16, 2008, the United Nations’ SEED Initiative announced 15 finalist for the 2008 Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development. Las Mujeres Solares of Totogalpa (literally, The Solar Women of Totogalpa”) was selected based on their plan to launch a cooperative business that will produce and market photovoltaics made from recycled solar cells and solar cookers adapted for local needs.
Salud del Sol work in Sabana Grande de Totogalpa during the summer of 2008 is researching the possibility of a joint venture with Las Mujures Solares to place solar autoclaves in rural health clinics in Nicaragua. This premier project supports Salud del Sol’s mission of conducting research and development, acting as custodian for intellectual property, securing funding through donations and grants, performing market analysis and development, and providing other assistance for long-term sustainability of small businesses in poverty-stricken areas.
