Las Mujeres Solares de Totogalpa Selected as 2008 SEED Award Winner

On August 21, 2008, the United Nations’ SEED Initiative selected Las Mujeres Solares de Totogalpa as one of 5 winners for the 2008 Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development. Las Mujeres Solares was selected from based on their plan to continue to develop their cooperative business that produces and markets photovoltaics made from recycled solar cells and solar cookers adapted for local needs. While in Nicaragua in the summer of 2008, Salud del Sol staffer Anna Young worked with partner Grupo Fenix of Managua to develop the plan submitted to SEED on behalf of Las Mujeres Solares.

Each 2008 SEED award winner will receive a package worth $ 25,000 of tailor-made support services, international exposure, and networking activities to assist its development from a project idea to a sustainable enterprise and to create real impact. Nicaragua Ministry of Health Grants Permission

On July 9th, Lori Hanna, Executive Director and Anna Young, Director of Development along with Susan Kinne of Grupo Fenix met with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA). After the meeting, Salud del Sol received official permission from Dr. Jorge Orochena S., Director of Services Organizations, for the continuation of the solar autoclave research and development project.
